Homemade Mod Podge
Alright folks, hold onto your seats! Let’s start crafting, shall we? Well, I’m going to. So, while I’ll still be baking, I’m going to delve into the craft world as well! I do love arts and crafts, always have. But, I also understand that crafts don’t often fit into a tight budget and can become an expensive hobby. So, I will try my best to find cheaper ways to make cool things! And, when crafting, I’ll post the cost breakdown and where I bought my supplies so you might know where to start yourself.
This was the first step: homemade mod podge. I thought about buying the real stuff…but it’s so expensive! I only paid $3.50 to make this so we’ll see how we do with the homemade version for now. I found the original at babblingsandmore.com – Bridget posted it! So, pasted below for you are her instructions, ingredients and disclaimer; not altered.
Honestly, this stuff was so easy to make! Not very messy at all! It’s a 50-50 mixture glue/water. I have the cost breakdown and where I purchased the different items at the bottom.
Pint Jar Mod Podge (matte)
White glue (I used Elmer’s but feel free to use your favorite white glue)
Water
Cost breakdown:
White glue, 2 4-oz bottles – $2 (Target)
Pint jar – $1.50 (Michael’s)
Total cost: $3.5o
Bridget said to just add 1 tbsp of clear varnish if you want it to have a glossy finish but she hadn’t tried it yet. I think I’ll try the varnish in my next batch. Let me know if you have suggestions!
Bridget’s Disclaimer: If you are wanting to do a long term or permanent project, the original Mod Podge may work better since they do add additional ingredients that make the finish last longer. The glue solution may yellow over time. This is just a substitution, not a replacement.
Thanks for posting this! I was telling someone the other day that you could make your own but I had forgotten the portions for each!
You’re welcome! I couldn’t believe how cheap it was to make this in comparison to the original stuff! My friend, Steph, was who tipped me off on this one!
